What makes a STEM College successful? Some may say it is the students, some may say it is the faculty, or the alumni, or the community partners, or the education partners, or the employers. At the 6th Annual YSU STEM Awards Dinner, all of our STEMians concluded that just one group will not make a STEM College successful; all of them work together to make YSU STEM the best it can be.

The 6th Annual STEM Awards Dinner was held on Thursday, February 20th, 2014, with the biggest crowd the event has ever seen! The STEM College was proud to have at least one award winner from each of the previous years in attendance, along with other important members of the YSU STEM Community. These previous winners and distinguished members of the YSU STEM Community help to hold us together in many different ways, like continuing to be excellent alumni and being a part of the STEM Advisory Council.

Congressman Tim Ryan, provided guests with the opening remarks for the night, exclaiming his joy over the improvements Youngstown has been undergoing with the help of the STEM College and our Community Partners. After echoing the Congressman’s praise, Dr. Martin Abraham, Dean of the YSU STEM College, presented the awards to each of the recipients. The awards and winners were:

Outstanding Alumnus: Dr. Thomas Serenko-ODNR, Chief of Ohio’s Geological Survey and Ohio’s State Geologist

Outstanding Alumnus: Bill Kennedy, Jr.- Redex/Udder Cream

Outstanding Young Alumnus: Dr. Robert Cicchillo- Dow AgroSciences

Outstanding Young Alumna: Andrea L. Arnio- Novelis Corp.

Outstanding Community Partner: Siemens- represented by Mr. Jim Menego

Outstanding Education Partner: Tom Reardon- Texas Instruments

Intern of the Year: Teresa McKinney

Intern Employer of the Year: Nucor Steel Auburn, Inc.

Each of the recipients received their award and thanked their supporters. There were many laughs and memories shared by each of the awardees. In addition to thanking their families, they thanked our great university for the experiences that they couldn’t have received anywhere else.
