Thursday, February 14, 2013 wasn’t just a day for people around the world to celebrate their love for one another. For area middle school students, it was a day where they could celebrate their love of mathematics.
MATHCOUNTS is a program sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers that focuses on students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. The competition was locally sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Society of Professional Engineers and YSU College of STEM, but major funding was provided by Dominion East Ohio. The competition encourages students to think critically, as well as encourages them to work on their problem solving skills.
The top teams of local competition, held at Youngstown State University, will move on to the state competition in Columbus on March 9, 2013. The top teams advancing to the state competition are Boardman Glenwood Middle School, Hubbard Middle School, and Poland Middle School. Also advancing to the state competition is Bobby Long, from Canfield Middle School; Aaron Kemats, from Lisbon David Anderson Middle School; and Ahmed Amireh, from William S. Guy Middles School.
