This year’s YSU Concrete Canoe team has come back from the June 20-22 Nationals Competition at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus with an 11th place victory and an experience that will last a lifetime.

“I am very proud of the canoe and my team, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Going to nationals was an honor we hope to achieve again,” Team Captain Taylor Simcox said. They also plan on making it to Nationals again next year.

The women took 8th place in their endurance race and the men placed 10th. In addition to placing well in the endurance races, the team also place 6th in the final product, which includes the canoe, the display, and the cut-a-way that belongs with the canoe. Due to the weather, some of the races were cancelled, but there was still plenty of excitement to go around. The canoes were also weight and swamp tested. Some canoes went home in one piece, whereas some went home with pieces of the hull missing or cracked.
